Bedbugs, those tiny, blood-sucking pests that have plagued humanity for centuries, are making a comeback. Despite modern advancements in pest control, these resilient insects continue to thrive. Experts warn that the bedbug resurgence is real, and it’s affecting cities worldwide.

The numbers don’t lie

Recent data reveals a significant increase in bedbug infestations across the globe. In the United Kingdom, instances have surged by a staggering 278% in just two years. Paris, a city known for its romantic charm, faced a bedbug outbreak in October 2023, just before fashion week. Now, with the Olympics also in Paris, one wonders what the global impact will be with so many traveling from all points on the globe.

Hotspots and hideouts

Which U.S. cities are most affected? The usual suspects top the list: Chicago (for the fourth consecutive year), New York, Philadelphia, and Cleveland. Orkin’s 2024 ranking of bedbug-infested cities also includes Greensboro, N.C., Milwaukee, and Tampa, which jumped ten spots to number 31 in the country.

Recognizing the enemy

How do you spot these elusive creatures? Bedbugs are reddish-brown, about the size of apple seeds, and incapable of flight. They hide in crevices, clutter, and even library books. Their bites result in red welts that itch relentlessly. Vigilance is key—know what to look for, especially when traveling.

Prevention and control

These pests are equal-opportunity invaders, infiltrating homes, hotels, and public spaces. While bedbugs are persistent, you can take steps to protect yourself:

  1. Mattress covers: Use bedbug-proof mattress covers at home and inquire about them when booking hotels.
  2. Vacuum regularly: Keep your living spaces clean and clutter-free.
  3. Heat and cold treatment: Extreme temperatures can kill bedbugs. Wash infested clothing in hot water or freeze it.
  4. Insecticides: Consult professionals for safe and effective treatments.

Legal action may be necessary

If they spot signs of bed bugs, victims should notify hotel management or the owners of a short-term rental. If the infestation ruins a long-anticipated vacation or important business travel, victims can consult with an attorney who handles bedbug injuries to secure compensation for turning their lives upside down.
