Determine If You Indeed Have a Bed Bug Infestation in Your Condo

Bed bugs can easily be confused for other types of insects in your condo. It’s very important to review and understand the appearance of bed bugs in order to confirm your suspicions. We have provided a diagram below that show the varied appearances of bed bugs throughout their life cycle –

Bed bugs feed on blood as their form of nutrition and as such, they will hide in places where it’s most convenient for them to feed. You can typically find bed bugs within your bed. In order to properly do an inspection, make sure you strip your bed of any linens, mattress covers and comforters. Grab your cellphone or flashlight, turn off the lights in your rooms and then turn on your flashlight.

Closely inspect the ridges of your mattress and look for dark-brown, reddish spots and of course, bed bugs, much like in the photo here –

We also recommend inspecting other areas of your home like furniture, behind artwork and other semi-hidden and dark places. If you have found bed bugs, take pictures of them and attempt to capture them in a secure container.

Notify the Condo Association of the Bed Bug Infestation

You will want to notify the Condo association of the bed bug infestation and clearly document your communications with them. We also recommend conversing with other neighbors and trying to find out if other units have experienced bed bugs.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the Condo association to ensure that their building is free of any bed bug infestations as there can be significant losses financially due to furniture and other personal belongings including mental and physical harm.
