Tips for preventing bed bugs on vacation

Florida, with its sandy beaches and sunny skies, beckons vacationers from all over the world. From family-friendly attractions to vibrant nightlife, there’s something for everyone. Like any travel destination, there’s a need to be cautious when you travel here. One such concern is bed bugs.

Navigating this concern doesn’t mean altering your plans. Instead, you can stay informed and take a few precautions.

Research can go a long way

Before finalizing your accommodation, skim through the recent reviews to see what others say. Occasional mentions of bed bugs shouldn’t be a cause for alarm, but consistent complaints might warrant reconsideration of that vacation rental.

Luggage caution

While the bed may seem like the most convenient spot for your suitcase, it’s best to put your luggage in the bathtub until you’ve thoroughly inspected everything else in the room. Once you check the luggage rack or closet shelf, you can put your luggage on it. By keeping your bags off the beds, chairs, and floors, you significantly reduce the risk of them becoming infested with bed bugs.

Doing a quick room scan is always a good start

Take a few minutes to inspect the room. Check for tiny brownish bugs or dark specks around the bed, particularly the mattress’s seams, folds and edges. Additionally, check chairs and any other cloth items or items with creases in the room.

Check before you leave

Once your Florida trip ends and you’re back home, don’t relax just yet. Before settling in, wash all the clothes you took with you, regardless of whether they were worn. Using a high heat setting on your dryer can eliminate any potential stowaways.

A bed bug infestation when you visit the Sunshine State could result in your filing a legal claim. Discussing your case with someone familiar with applicable laws is beneficial. Contact us at Bed Bug Law to learn more
