Attacks On Labor Day – How To Avoid Them
Are you heading to Panama City Beach over the Labor Day weekend? If so, you should take precautions to avoid getting attacked by bed bugs. Some things you can do include:
Keep your luggage in the bathroom until you search for bed bugs.
One of the ways bed bugs travel from place to place is in luggage. They crawl into suitcases and bags. When the guest leaves, he or she takes the bugs along. The bed bugs wait until they have reached a new destination before leaving the bag. Then they crawl out and search for a new place to build a colony. That new place may be your bed at home.
Fortunately, bed bugs do not like to crawl in the open. They prefer carpet and the nooks where the floor meets the wall. They are unlikely to crawl into the bathroom and into your luggage.
Conduct a thorough search for bed bugs.
You can see bed bugs with the naked eye in all stages of their lifecycle. These include adult bed bugs, nymphs and eggs. They are most likely to be in tight spaces, like seams on the mattress and the joints of the bed frame.
Bed bugs can hide in most places in a room. They are most likely going to be somewhere in or around the bed. But they can also be in the furniture or even the baseboards along the wall. You will need a flashlight. The one on your phone will do just fine. Take the flashlight and search all of the following:
- Mattress – top and bottom and especially in the seams
- Bed frame – pay attention to nooks and crannies
If you find bed bugs, take pictures with your phone.
It is extremely important that you document the presence of bed bugs in your hotel room. You can use the photos to demonstrate to management that there is an infestation. If you later discover bed bugs in your home, you can use the photos to indicate that they came from the hotel. And if you are attacked by bed bugs in your hotel, the photos can help you when you take legal action.
Change rooms or leave the hotel.
The best thing to do is to find another place to stay. There is a good chance that your room is not the only one with bed bugs. If you do have to stay at the same hotel, move to a different part of the hotel. Practice the same diligence in the new room – keep luggage in the bathroom and conduct a thorough search before settling in.
