As Bed Bug attorneys, we get asked quite often, just how do you check for bed bugs in a bed or furniture? This blog post by Bed Bug Law will help you in identifying bed bugs and finding the most optimal way to check for bed bugs in a bed or other furniture. But, first, let’s talk about what bed bugs are and how they can be identified.
What Are Bed Bugs and Why Are They Found in Beds and Furniture?
Bed bugs are very small insects and their scientific name is “Cimex lectularius”. Bed bugs feed on human blood to survive. In order to receive their nutrients, they hide in places frequented by humans. Bed bugs cling onto clothing inside of furniture and cling inside your bed so that they can feed during the night when there is restricted movement.
When you are bitten by bed bugs, you can typically find large red welts across your body as shown in the photo below –
These welts can not only cause significant physical discomfort, there can be some mental side effects as well like – loss of sleep, stress, paranoia and insomnia according to the American Sleep Association.
Finding Bed Bugs in Your Bed or Furniture
So just how do you find bed bugs in your bed and furniture? Bed bugs love to hide in dark areas within a home, hotel or Airbnb. In beds, tell tale signs of bed bugs are found through dark-red blood stains and in linens such as mattress covers and sheets. In furniture, you can find bed bugs in folded clothing as well as eggs in drawers and other unfrequented areas.
Before continuing in your investigation, use the diagram listed below –
To confirm the existence of bed bugs in your bed, you will want to grab a flashlight (or use the flashlight function on your smartphone), completely remove any bedding or linens from your bed. For furniture, keep that flashlight handy and take out and separate any drawers, clothing and other material from the furniture.
Next, turn off the lights in your home and closely inspect any un-lit areas, if you see any insects or any similarities between what you see and the photos below, you may want to contact a bed bug attorney –
